Thank you Sister for your guidance and wisdom during the RCIA process. Thank you Sister for believing in me and challenging me to get involved. And thank you Sister for your love and friendship. As a once lapsed Catholic, you have helping me reconnecting with my Catholic faith and enriched my faith journey.
For All These Things and More

My life has been touched and enriched in every phase by Sisters of a number of different congregations. I am a better Catholic Christian because of their lives and work.
I had the privilege of sixteen years’ formal education by Sisters, first eight years with the School Sisters of St. Francis, four with the Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and four more with the School Sisters of St. Francis at Alverno College, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. During that time, in addition to an excellent grounding in academics and religious studies, they provided listening ears and hearts, practical help, firm boundaries and living examples of wisdom, love and giving, frequently all at the same time. For that, thank you, Sisters! Read the rest of this entry »
Infused Us With a Sense of God

My education was shaped by some of the most intelligent, dedicated women anyone would ever meet. The Dominicans (Amityville) at St. Thomas the Apostle in Woodhaven, Queens, taught huge classes of children – and somehow we learned in spite of the large numbers.
In high school, we were privileged to be taught by five different communities, each specializing in certain subjects. The Sisters of St. Joseph (Brentwood) taught religion, Latin, Spanish and English; Dominicans taught Math, Science, German; Daughters of Charity taught History and Economics; Sisters of Mercy were the artists and musicians; Daughters of Wisdom taught French. In an all girls’ high school in Brooklyn (Bishop McDonnell Memorial) these women challenged us to be the best we could be, while recognizing our different abilities. They also knew how to have fun and inspire school spirit, giving us time to sign nominations for our principal to win the “Principal of the Year” – and he did!

Tears Flowed

Ellen Keelty Cleary
Huntington, NY
Returning to the eighth grade after the Summer vacation, I learned my teacher was the same nun I had in the seventh. The tears flowed. She had been so strict and had such a tight grip on the class. I floundered in the seventh and excelled in the eighth. Little did I understand then that although Sr. Janet was 19 years old, she had 46 eighth graders in her charge. Raising two children myself there were many days I understood what a precious individual she was. We are still close friends and visit and call on occasion but I am grateful for her guidance in my character, faith, outlook on life and deep appreciation of life. She was only one of many of the wonderful Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville that I was lucky enough to know over the twelve years of parochial education.

I was taught in grade school for several years by the Sisters of the Holy Ghost. Their Mother House was in San Antonio, Texas. My school was St. Joseph’s Catholic school, in Zwolle, Louisiana.
Our Sisters were from Ireland. I remember them as very talented and dedicated to their work. Some of them recognized very early that I had an interest and talent in art. They encouraged me and even gave me the fun job of creating drawings, which they then made copies of, for the entire class to color. Read the rest of this entry »

Sharing Life
November 29, 2009
Eileen McGovern, SSJ
For many years, I have prayed in gratitude for the Sisters of Charity who taught me at St. Anne’s in Jersey City. I am especially grateful to S. Joseph Michaela and S. Jean Marita. I am also grateful for the Pallotine Sisters at Holy Rosary Academy in Union City where I went to high school especially Sisters Eugenia and Regina. In college I met S. Consuela Marie and S. Grace Margaret who gave me a great love for history. Needless to say, I am also thankful for S. Ann Beatrice and the many Sisters of Saint Joseph with whom I have been privileged to share life for over 50 years.

Women religious have had an incredible impact on the life of the Catholic Church in the United States. They have started and maintained schools and influenced the education of both Catholic and non-Catholic students at all levels from early childhood through graduate programs. They created and administered hospitals serving the health needs of huge numbers of Americans. They developed and continued social service programs that served the poor. Their service to the nation is unmatched by any other group. These sisters gave of themselves totally as they did the work of the Lord. Read the rest of this entry »
